Decreasing the FISD carbon footprint

FISD has always been a front runner for school districts in environmental friendly practices. Through a partnership with the City of Frisco Environmental Services, they won Best Environmental Education program for a school district from Keep Texas Beautiful. With new technologies and strategies, there is much more I would like to help the district accomplish.

  1. School wide recycling programs – Currently, schools recycle classroom items and some have added plastic recycling in the lunchrooms to their programs. With my expertise in this area, one of my goals would be to achieve a more encompassing program that would include kitchen and janitorial items throughout the district. As schools increase their recycling programs, they will bring savings through reduced trash collection as well as create a stronger environmentally friendly atmosphere for our children and school staff members.

  2. Improved Green Building Requirements for new and existing school buildings – As a school board member, I would drive a movement to better research green building practices up to and achieving LEEDS certification. As our school district increases size it is important to build structures which will not diminish our natural resources. Though more environmentally conscious building techniques are usually more expensive in the construction stage, the benefits both economically and environmentally pay-off in the long term.
  3. Increased awareness of the environmental culture of our schools’ community - I believe that environmental awareness is a way of life which should be an integral part of everything we do on a daily basis. Our children’s awareness and ability to better understand the world around then is imperative. In my first term of office, I would seek to expand programs such as “No Idling” parking lots, recycling campaigns such as the Valentine’s Day Phonebook Recycling Contest, and reuse collections supporting the Frisco Humane Society, throughout the district. These programs have proven to help our young learners become more cognoscente of their role in environmental health.
